sports psychology overview

Coaches, professional and collegiate players consistently state what research supports - the mental game is 90% of success. It is the definitive difference maker. Jim Meier regularly works with individuals and teams including coaches and parents of players on the mental aspects of sports. He is a lover of sports, life long athlete and coach of youth and junior high teams. This coupled with his experience as a business consultant, coach and trainer make for a special blend of experience and skills. Ages of participants have ranged from 8 - 80.

Jim's approach to teaching the mental game makes it:

    1. understandable
    2. thorough
    3. applicable
    4. repeatable
    5. enjoyable

Participants walk away with increased confidence, enthusiasm and many specific how-tos.

This is done through use of customized mental skills assessments, a personality assessment and breaking the mental game down into manageable, bite size components. These are:

17) Vision (result focus)

7) Self-Talk

18) Imagery

19) Relaxed Tension

9) Self-Worth

20) Anger Management

10) Comfort Zone

21) Setting Meaningful Goals

11) Positive Habit Formation

22) Affirming Success

Jim's clients are taught how to apply these components in practice, workouts, event preparation, the event itself and post-competition self-assessment.

Assessment

Mental game assessment is used to take days, weeks and even months off the improvement process. The key is to pinpoint improvement areas to focus on. Accurately knowing those areas and applying the mental tools to them ultimately leads to the singular difference maker for all athletes - CONFIDENCE

TCC has two types of assessment tools:

  1. Use of either the 36-item or 54-item Self-Assessment questionnaire designed to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement. These can also be administered to others who have capability to assess the athlete's mental performance. This provides additional data for analysis and focus.
  2. Use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality profile. Jim Meier is certified in the MBTI. Profile data is used in several key ways:
    • Provide specific information to the athlete regarding his/her strengths and weakness tendencies by both sport and position.
    • Improve method of instruction
    • Enhance communication between Jim and the athlete(s)
